Some time last week That's my place with the barley and cows. We have a long history of growing arable crops, the place next door was a stronghold of the Knights Templar since the 1100s and the area round the village is documented as producing oats barley and turnips. These were the naughty monks who became rather addicted to acquiring valuable trinkets by crusading in the Holy land and beyond. The most well known of the things they supposedly acquired being the Holy Grail (as in the Indiana Jones film!) Although disbanded by Henryy VIII and expelled from England, they went on to further notoriety on the high seas - using their flag which is now known as the Skull and Crossbones. They were also the guiding light behind the shadier side of Freemasonry

I have just finished reading SHEEP (the remarkable story of the humble animal that built the modern world) by Alan Butler. It describes the way the Cistercians kept sheep, the part played by the Knights Templar and the trading of wool across Europe. It also describes how the industral revolution started and the spinning and weaving of wool especially in Yorkshire. If sheep and wool today was as profitable as it was then, we would all be millionaires

Thanks for the history lesson 4WD - was one of my most hated school subjects, but now I blame the boring teaching of it. Bopeep - I think your book should be given a mention in the Book section so now it is - do feel free to add anything Bopeep
