Yes i hope they hang on as they are all first timers , but Swales being Swales they are on the whole good mothers Are the texelX lambs quick on their feet though? I know my pure bred Blackies are fine but the year I x'd with a Ryeland I had a couple of 'chilled' lambs the following morning although I had seen them being suckled shortly after a normal birth to experienced mothers.

My experiance of texels is that they are well covered in hair for warmth and very quick on their feet , also the swales are good mothers . I allways have my 22/250 fox rifle with me and the gamekeeper knows it's the best time to take him out as they come in for the afterbirth so he is around quite a bit in the night so hopefully we should have him covered . But as for being quick to get up i think they are very good , when i lambed outside as a sheperd with 1200 ewes i got rid of the charrolais and the suffolks and went all texel for that very reason

I totally agree with Psycho, having suffolks I've found that those crossed to a Texel are a lot more up and at it than the pure breds. All my purebreds are now put to the Texel ram.

Thanks for the info - the person who buys my Blackie ewe lambs has begun to use Texel on them - certainly seemed to get on OK last year, but I've no experience of them.

I have used fine boned texels for the first timers i never had any trouble lambing them in the past like some say but then i don't go silly on food when they are in lamb so lambs arn't huge at birth . The plan is to keep the ewe lambs for breeding back to the texel

The first two suffolk/texel x ram lambs that caused all the problems last night.

Might as well try and post some of our lot this year: First one out, nice lamb bang on our target weight of 4.5 kg. About 12 hours old here, and looking a bit dopey having been up and sucked some huge amount of colostrum. The trick with Texels is to tune the ewe feeding: they're very thrifty compared with some breeds, and don't need much (or sometimes any ) concentrate until a couple of weeks before lambing, and even then don't overdo it. This was the second one out, a twin to the first one, but only 2.2 kg. Most likely there were originally triplets, with two little ones on one side, and one larger one on the other. One of the little triplets has probably been aborted (without us noticing) some weeks ago. It's a lively little lamb though, VERY greedy, and will probably do fine as a meat lamb. This was the only lamb under 3.5 kg this year, and 80% of them were between 3.8 and 5.2 kg, with just a couple of singles to big ewes coming in at around 6.5 kg. That size lamb to a big old ewe is fine, because her birth canal is big enough to get them out without a struggle. This shot taken about a week later, by which time they're all out and looking lively. Hurrah for synchronising!
