Thanks 4wd for making a lovely September banner from photo supplied by my OH. Apples overhang our garden in S. Staffs!

The original had apples more on a diagonal which didn't fit well so I rotated, cropped and mirrored to get a banner shape.

Nice October banner 4WD, thanks. The steading in the picture looks at least partially abandoned, like so many.

I think it's called Bank House or something similar, at the bottom end of Bransdale. They had a farm sale about ten years previous from where we bought a loader tractor, the son had had an accident of some kind and lost part of his leg! The buildings to be fair were a bit rough then, the house is lived in and land let off but still farmed much like before by neighboours mainly sheep grazing.

I've never known quite where Bransdale turns into Sleightholm Dale, but there are certainly some superbly built semi-derelict houses in the lower part of Bransdale. The stonework of Stork House in particular is absolutely lovely, and despite the snag of having no road to it, I'm surprised nobody has bought it and done it up (and hired a bulldozer: there is a vestigial moor track to it).

www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3231040This is it with better indication of the area - similar viewpoint which is a forest track just above the fields. Bransdale is very remote, before you get to the really isolated spots up stone tracks - which is all very well until you want a load of building materials or other little things like mains power, telephone, mobile phone, internet and more. The National Trust own the majority of farms in the main part higher up - which is not all bad - but they are quite restrictive about modernising the holdings. However most farms have modest sized new buildings and the old barns and traditional farmhouses are well maintained and still useful.

The geograph photo shows the buildings looking in better condition, probably earlier, and there's sheep grazing round the buildings rather than horses. Horse-pox is always a bad sign in fields. I bet that's a cold old spot having Cowhouse bank to the SW, and presumably blocking most of the sun in mid-winter.
