A late friend's widow called by this afternoon to see if I'd like to have his 12 volumes of The Standard Cyclopedia of Modern Agriculture. It was published in 1908 and I've just thumbed through a few of them and found these photos which will be of interest to someone on here. Uploaded with ImageShack.usMore to come when I can straighten and crop it

;D Great pics Wr, which volume did you find those in.......I have a horrible feeling your going to tell me it's one I haven't got, I only managed to rescue volumes 4 and 6 off FIL many years ago, goodness only knows where he disposed of the rest Mine were published in 1909 by The Gresham Publishing Company. There's rather an interesting piece on The Collie in volume 4. There's some nice pics of Hampshire Down's and I can think of someone who would be interested in those.

That's fascinating WR - and quite a big farm, acreage-wise, surely

Yes I thought barely enough equipment for 500acres which would still be quite large (but probably run almost single handed now)

Brilliant pics, love all the old books, I have them all except volumes 3 and 9, welcome to borrow them Lynn if you would like. I keep saying I'm going to catalogue all my Dads old records as I have everything from when he started at the age of about 13, buying and selling anything and everything, just need to find the time

Do these look bigger than 'modern' ones? Maybe it's just the local herd which are little... I thought this was a nice pic of Belted Galloways Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Maybe they're not belted Galloway 4wd. I'll have another look as I notice the title says Belted Cattle. Will check and report back.
Have checked it out 4wd. It says that the belted cattle of Galloway were thought to have been bred from the Dutch belted cattle and the title says Belted Cattle. So not specifically Galloways.
