Here's the entry for the cuckoo. David Attenborough said on radio 4 a few Sundays ago that in the "old days" it was thought that the cuckoo laid it's eggs on the ground and then carried it in it's beak to the recipients' nests as is bourne out in this piece. Now they know that the cuckoo is able to get the egg into nests with small openings by way of it's protruding rear end (not sure of the proper terminology sorry ;D ) Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Amazing pictures, if you ever consider disposing of the books, please let me know. I collect old agricultural books.

Is there a photo of a New Forest pony WR? In a very old Observer series book the NF pony looks just like one I had as a child - in the newer version it looks completely different!

Thanks for that WR - rather a lot of different sorts there, some similar dark bay, no white, with a bit of an Exmoor muzzle - but a lot are more showy.

It is a very interesting set of books. I came across a complete set recently as well (weren't exactly cheap but worth it ) I quite like the plates at the back of some of the volumes that are a cut away of the animal Also got my Grandfather's brother's set of Progressive Farming from the late 40's early 50's
