Sorry I am not a farmer but am enjoying looking through the site and reading with interest, your posts about all sorts of things. I was once a gamekeeper for the Army at Bovington and Lulworth Camps in Dorset. This was a job I thoroughly enjoyed and learnt a bit about farming too in the process. Unfortunately I had a wife who did not like the lifestyle and after 4 years had to give it up I have done a lot of shooting in the past both full bore and small bore including competition shooting at Bisley and skeet shooting at a local club. |Whilst in Germany I also studied and passed my exam for the Jagdschein (German hunting licence). Unfortunately I don't shoot any more mainly due to wearing glasses permanently! I am now into falconry and own a Red Tailed Hawk called Isis. I now work in the town as an employability and personal development trainer which sometimes means working with people who do not want to work. Well that's all I can say about myself at this time really. atb Steve

Hi Steve and welcome - I'm not a farmer either so no apologies needed. Your job sounds as if it might be quite stressful so I hope you enjoy your time with Isis. Do tell us more about her and some photos would be good

Are you taking Isis to the show, Steve? I had to look up the whereabouts of Stokesley my geography is rubbish but I'd have made an educated guess if 4wd had posted before I did

Hi Steve, welcome aboard, glad you like our site, we're a friendly bunch & like hearing about the different things our members get up to. Isis sounds lovely, have always had a great admiration for hawks of any size. Hope you'll post regularly & enjoy our chatter. We'll have to get a hawk type smiley.

Oh, she's a stunner - welcome SteveP.
What do you work your bird with - do you use an HPR at at all? I also love to watch them working and once did have a session working one of my Weimaraners with a Harris hawk - have to have a very good quartering dog with good pointing skills! Not entirely sure mine qualify...

thank you
Unfortunately I only have a jack russell who is very old and not very sociable with other dogs never mind a hawk lol. I would love a HWV but not at the moment.
I will be walking up with Isis on the soar or using ferrets to bolt rabbits once I get some more permission sorted.

I bred a decent litter of HWVs four years ago now - a couple of those bitches have just been bred from and they are certainly lovely tempered animals, although very sensitive. I haven't seen one yet who quarters well, though. My two bitches now are really good working dogs and ace pointers, fast and accurate and pretty steady on point, so that's what I'd be looking for - there must be some good working HWVs up your way!

Her weight has crept up a bit this week due to me being ill with a tooth abscess and so a face like a chipmonk! Anyway took her up to the field tonight after weighing her at 2lb 14.5oz (1oz over her best flying weight) anyway started the training and she flew 50' to the glove. Because her response was good and that also was the first time she had done over 30' I let out the full length of creance line (150'). It was a bit windy with gusts but she was focused on me. I offered a full chick on the glove, she bobbed her head a couple of times, shifted her feet then bent her head into the wind and hey she took off. I let her have a mouthful then placed her back onto the training perch and tried again. She did it twice more! I was so chuffed with her I let her have a good crop full. I love it when things go right

Isis doing really well this week. She is flying 100 metres to the glove with good reponse times when called. She will soon be flying free then she will be trained on a dummy bunny :-)
