Mostly lightning instantly boils sap immediately under the bark of trees, and often (especially in Oaks) blows off a strip of bark with a truncated wedge shaped bit of timber under it. Sometimes though, possibly when a tree is just thinking about rotting down the middle, the low resistance path is right down the middle of the trunk and some branches, and the whole thing explodes.
