My laptop picked up a virus called Security Shield. It disabled AVG and kept popping up saying I had a number of threats that could be eliminated by the payment of $79. Needless to say, I didn't pay it, and got the computer working again by doing a system restore back 10 days. Anyone know if the thing islikely to be still lurking or has it gone for good ?

Davep, this is probably the blind leading the blind, but have you done a complete computer scan with AVG for viruses? The other thing that might be worth doing, if you've got it, is a malware scan, I have Malware Bytes installed on my computer which compliments AVG. Hopefully someone with a bit more techie knowledge will be along later who understands these things a little better than me.

It would be unusual if it isn't still lurking somewhere. It may have beeen lurking for days before it started popping up so you can't work out where it came from. If it does come back google is your friend. I like the bleeping computer site which usually gives detailed instructions on what to do plus screenshots so you can see if you definitely have that problem. It says you probably need Malwarebytes and gives a legitimate download site for it (it's free). www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-my-security-shield

I had the same virus Dave about a month ago and it was very difficult to get rid of. A friend came and rooted it out of about 40 files which it was hiding in. As you said, it had disabled AVG and as Stockslave suggested, he used Malwarebytes to hunt it down and despatch it. Thanks,4wd for the bleeping site. Will have a look at it.

Thanks for your help. I will probably adopt the ostrich syndrome for the moment unless it comes back.

Thanks for your help. I will probably adopt the ostrich syndrome for the moment unless it comes back. Noooo Download malawarebytes from here www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.phpjust the free version will be fine Then do a full system scan and delete any 'spurious' things that they say. Then go back to being an ostrich If you are feeling energetic, you could always get rid of avg and replace it with avast from here www.avast.com/free-antivirus-downloadHTH

Something called Systems tool has taken over my PC - and says computer is loaded with bad stuff - seems to have disabled AVG also though AVG did update or was in process of updating when the screen appeared Turned off at the moment and hoping someone [maybe son fortunately home just now] will rescue me later!

Please can you put this more simply for a dimbo 4WD!!! "if you boot into safe mode with networking" how do you "boot into safe mode" and what is an example of "networking" - does that mean on the internet in general or on forums I don't belong to twitter or facebook for instance. "Usually tap F8 as it starts"....... does this cause loss of other stored info

Does your virus pop up windows like the bleeping computer example Joyce? From - www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-system-toolIf so, you only need to download Malwarebytes and a small file called rkill.exe to stop the virus creating pop-ups so you can work on it. If you scroll down the page about it, the instructions are probably clearer than I could write. When you boot into safe mode, (repeatedly tap F8 as you start it) the computer starts with the absolute minimum of stuff running, the display may look different (sort of crude) but most things still work normally. To get out of safe mode just restart as normal. The idea is it stops the virus processes starting up while you disable and remove it permanently, safe mode doesn't itself do anything at your computer like remove programs or files. You need to reverse the changes it made in Internet Options because that's how it keeps redirecting you - until it's stopped in safe mode. I'd say it's a fairly easy one to remove as they go from the look of it. Some are really evil and keep re-installing themselves.

What a coincidence! I spent yesterday afternoon frantically googling for the same thing - with a perturbed brother on the end of the phone! Came up with the same solution - Rkill & then Malwarebytes. For some reason, despite being told otherwise (brothers! ) he did the Malwarebytes scan first, which removed the Rkill download, so I'm not 100% he's fixed it, but at least he's got the links to follow. A couple of weeks ago I was googling when suddenly got this on my screen! Panic! The trojan total was racking up in front of my eyes at an alarming rate & there was an option put in front of me to "Remove All" Thankfully I hesitated a split second & realised that it wasn't actually MY computer folder in front of me, but a very clever web page. ... & I started to breath again! ;D Don't know what would have happened if I'd clicked on "Remove All" Don't really want to find out! Surf safe everyone!

Thanks 4WD - I'll have a go when son gets here just in case!! Yes page looks just as you post above.
Yes Jackladd I too was very wary, partly because of this very thread - if my memory was better I might not have thought the thread was about system tools instead of security shield ;D
