A while ago my laptop froze, nothing worked, tried Ctrl, Alt and Delete, still nothing so removed battery and then started up again. Is there a safer way out of this problem ?

Sorry OB, I'm not up on laptops. With mine I'd try what you did with Alt etc., then press the off button and failing that pull the plug.

Control + Alt + Delete, sometimes done twice will usually bring up task manager, then you can close any stuck programs and if that doesn't work there's a tab to restart/shut down. It won't always work so the next thing is press and hold the power button. In power options you can set this (in advance) to shut down, although shut down is the usual default anyway. It is a bit risky in that you might trigger a prolonged memory check scan thing on restart, but pressing the power button is preferable to last resort remove battery/power cord - but that is sometimes the only option. I think if you could get into task manager the processor is probably running at 100% so it can't respond to any input - some sort of feedback loop maybe.
