OH woke me in the early hours this morning because she heard a car stop outside,as we have buildings both sides of the road we are always concerned about theft etc.By the time we had got dressed and outside, the car had moved on and stopped again,we took our car and sure enough a van was parked in a gateway, two young lads ,very apologetic at disturbing us but they had puncture and had to call their dad out to fix it ???All OK, You cant really call the police out until a crime has been committed but not going to let any one pinch things from us without a struggle

Probably wouldn't stop in such a visible place if up to no good, always worth checking though even if that means just putting a light or two on - so they know you are alerted.

Well it is a big NO from me. Unless you are built like a brick err, Arnold Schwartzathingy, even then you do not know how many there are, or how violent they may be. As 4WD says lots of light and noise. If your stuff is insured you can always replace it.
Stay safe

It's a while ago now but there were a spate of buglaries round us where the crims would break in during the day, having established that the homeowner was out at work for the day. all well and good untill they picked on my mate, who was, at the time, running a milk round, and his day ended at 1pm, and this particular day he came home to find a chap carrying his telly out of the front door.
there were two of them but he was a big lad and he chased them across the fields and caught one and gave him a good kicking before the police arrived, they found the other chap hiding terrified in a barn two days later.
it turned out that the same blokes had injured a policeman who'd tried to stop them getting away from a previous crime, he'd put his arm through the getaway car window to grab the keys and they'd trapped his arm winding the window up, and driven off dragging him up the road. so there was no question of the criminals' 'rights' being infringed by him giving them a dusting as far as the coppers were concerned.

When anyone stops in the road...or pulls in to our yard, I will always take a look & ask them who they are looking for / what they want! My feelings are that the more people (fit & able people that is) that go out & question, or apprehend these "passers by"...then the more chance there is of stopping them picking on the elderly & vulnerable!!

I agree with your sentiments entirely, but given the level of violence, as you say, even against the elderly and vulnerable these days, my concern for Oxenboy, and now you Phil, is if you disturb someone attempting to steal very valuable machinery the possibility of things going badly wrong is worth considering. I hope that makes sense.

Get a grip mate...it has nothing to do with being "big or clever"! Very few, if any, of these thieving toe-rags are psychopathic killers!! In fact I would go as far as saying that the majority of the thieving scum bags are down right cowards! O.K, so if you apprehend someone & they turn violent...you make a choice depending on how you see the situation! We can not go through life being afraid of challenging people that probably have no good reason for being where they are, or doing what they are doing.....just in case one day we meet a nutter! What sort of deterrent is it to these low-lives’s...if we all sit in doors & turn the lights on??? How would some of you feel if a vehicle that was "acting suspiciously" on or near your property...was later involved in a robbery where an elderly person had their life savings stolen??? You can't give the police a registration number or any other details if you are sat in doors playing with the light switch!!

[quote author=phil It is my name! And how do you know if you are going to win a battle?[/quote] well for a start you hold your breath for a moment then have a moment of clarity.a hot head usually ends up making rash and reckless decisions.where as a calm and devious mind will win the day.but i for one can sleep easier in my bed knowing you have drawn the line in the sand.i salute you my friend
