Just finished "Now Then Lad...." by PC Mike Pannett - librarian picked it for me and it was enjoyable meeting all the rogues and travelling round North Yorkshire. Surely one of the characters must have been based on 4wd

I haven't heard of that one, it sounds similar to the Heartbeat writer who was in real life a PC at Glaisdale near Whitby - so the original books had suspiciously recognisable characters!

This tale was more like Heartbeat itself. I was disappointed when I read one of the books the original TV programme was based on.

Nicolas Rhea also writes in a couple of local papers - a sort of rural diary - and it's very boring and he repeats a lot of stuff over and over.

I've read all Mike Pannett's books so far after winning the first in a limerick writing competition over on FWi a few years ago. Really enjoyable and easy reads. You'll see the author speaking on policing matters occasionally on the tv. linkHey, that link thing is clever
