For a main A road (between Thirsk and Scarborough) this is very steep hill indeed - especially at the hairpin bend but again in the lower third. Caravans are banned and Articulated Lorries will often get stuck at the hairpin bend after losing traction to the drive wheels. There are incidents practically every week. Coming down is usually less dangerous with modern braking. This was often not the case in the past!
The view from the top is astounding on a clear day with the Pennines easily visible and you can pick out landmarks such as the radar domes at Menwith Hill. In the days of steam it was possible to follow a train's progress from York to Darlington. we used to live at a small farm on the right a mile or so from the start of the hill and it was not unusual for drivers to come to the house to use telephone - pre mobile early 1960s.

There can't be many modern cars not capable of the bank fairly easily, but I can certainly remember when that wasn't the case. I tried taking, my old Passat up it in 3rd gear all the way, and it did, just, although it involved taking the hairpin uncomfortably fast.
The visitor centre at the top is about as horrible as these places usually are (though the coffee is drinkable) but the footpath north along the top of the edge is very pleasant and quiet and gives superb views (and a useful but usually unsucessful chance to de-bounce the dog.)
