One from this morning about 9am It kept snowing most of the day and became a soggy nuisance rather than pretty! This the old shooting lodge place next door someone does live there mainly in the former caretaker lodgings and kitchens lower part on the right. The original owners stayed there on and off during (grouse) shooting season they had a very large house at Helmsley south of the moors - same family still own that. The Hall was sold off after WW2 and was a spectacularly impractical Youth Hostel until about 1990 The maintenance costs were overwhelming so they sold it on but there was a period of some five years it stood empty deteriorating steadily. The current owners have done a lot of work though to make everything weatherproof and safe again The main building is basically a hallway and two generous reception rooms, above the second floor the rooms are increasingly impractical and small - dominated by stairs up the tower - it's all for show really, and not that old it was started about 1855 but probably not complete until at least ten years later. The site is thought to have been a preceptory of the Knights Templar but real evidence for the location is sketchy. Their presence in the area is well documented even down to listing how much the items they owned made when forced to be sold.

This is taken through front window just now, they are at least a mile away. Quite interesting larger (click) The younger couple live in the chalet style lodge her Mother still has the house. They have always been horse mad but it is a working farm with a few cows and sheep, her husband has a recycling farm plastics business keeps it going. The road is a nightmare even in summer lorries can't get round a steep hairpin near the bottom so they have another little shed to drop stuff off down there.

Quite a lot of farms round here on the clay were unapproachable by vehicle in winter (unless it was freezing hard), up until the 1960s when there were grants for making up and/or concreting farm tracks. There used to be a fairly standard design of shed, which doubled as a garage for the "farm car" and somewhere to leave delivered items, positioned near the hard road, but they've pretty well all disappeared now.

Feeding lambs this afternoon. The tracks are from where I took hay a few days ago. The packed snow was the only bit couldn't blow into a drift. They look a little surreal and not hard to see how sheep get buried but all there so far as I know as they were right down by the beck.

These were just peeping but not opening before the recent harsh conditions, and seem to have come through it reasonably well. 11C today they are enjoying that - despite buffeting wind and drizzle.

Garden centre conifer display, I've always had a soft spot for these but don't want to buy them especially at £18 a go. It takes a while to get them to this stage though.
