Took cows down here this morning just as a shower went across field behind - but just a few spots where I was. You could hear big drops hitting tree leaves over there. Under the footbridge this nicely composed clump of Water Mint - Mentha Aquatica That's a straight forward one to ID but we have a spearminty dark one I have posted pics on the local botany group but they can't agree what it is and even wonder if it's a garden escape hybrid. Seems unlikely but not impossible as the Shooting Lodge Hall nearby used to have quite elaborate gardens 100 years ago with some exotic plants from the main house at Helmsley. (From last year)

Salton between Kirkbymoorside and Malton (Ryedale) this afternoon. The Metric rebel Geoff Bean moved here from his original farm near the coast at Ugthorpe. He insisted no metric units or EEC nonsense of any knd was permitted at his farm and milk had to be sold in gallons or pints for example. Well into the 1980s. (2007)

Stopped here again too. Quite low water levels just now but it is a bit peaty from several mm of rain on the moors a few days ago. A modest sized river The Dove - as it leaves Farndale at the bottom end of Douthwaite Dale the water seeps down through limestone into a maze of ancient natural tunnels which were original cut out by larger flows as the ice melted. Barely a mile downstream it all emerges from this quite small and low opening, having merged with Hutton Beck somewhere deep below the modern road just above the outlet

Medieval floor tiles at Byland. They have only survived due to being buried under feet of debris from collapsed roof and rubble deliberately thrown down. The livestock grazed over them for a few hundred years. It's free to go in and walk round there now.

Newsham Bridge, they have recently been doing a further refurb on this, it is very tall and for some reason the water seems to surge through it in a very destructive way it can also get about 20ft deep as there isn't much fall. Even today it seemed to surge and gurgle in a quite worrying way.

So murky today, sometimes mist or even fog is good to show the shape of trees as it isolates from distracting backgrounds. Not quite there with this but what a nice exceptionally pendulous wild birch tree. The colour is not quite there yet either it might be worth trying to visit this again it would be nice with snow I bet.

They made a nice effect with the lights on those little trees. Don't think anyone lives there TBH
