They always amaze me how they manage to grow even when snow is on the ground - not when it's frozen like our garden is though. I bought some 'reduced' tulip bulbs in mid-December to put in immediately I thought. Tried to do them today since I could find some bare ground but it was surprisingly solid still. Should be possible next day or two hopefully - and I don't suppose they would've been doing much root-growing the last 4 weeks. They seem firm still but have quarter inch green shoot showing.

The snowdrops are in a little corner under shrubs and there's a good layer of leaf mold on top of them, though the ground has been quite deeply frozen around them....not a lot of snow, just plenty of ice. Your tulips will probably be fine if the slugs don't wake up - or you could put them in a pot of compost in an outhouse, though that's a temptation to a rat!
