Losing my Ravie this morning is as bad as losing a dog. He'd been here at least 17 years, almost as long as we have, and was found dead by his hut. I think wild ravens had attacked him, possibly he was guarding food or his nest site - and I never heard a thing. He's now buried between 2 rose bushes in the garden where he always liked to be. Sorry about that, we do seem to get attached to animals don't we. Did he ever talk ? They are quite the mimics. A friend in school had one that would say a few words.

Thanks Lynn and McFarmer. It's been so quiet here today because although Ravie didn't mimic humans he had plenty of his own language and he barked. When we had ducks he also quacked. The hit squad haven't been back but it will be interesting to see if they return in the morning. Last year they all cavorted together with no violence, but perhaps the hard frost this year has made them more desperate for food. I know some will find it strange to mourn a raven, but I do feel honoured that I had such a close encounter with a wild and intelligent pet/pest of a bird for such a long time.

Thanks Jules and Heather. It's exactly a week now and so quiet.
Ravie was as good as any dog at making sure ewes were keen on their lambs, though far too cowardly to actually do anything, probably because he couldn't fly.
The 'hit squad' were around yesterday, so will have to be very careful when actually lambing, though hopefully in May there will be some other food around.
On a brighter note I don't have to watch the dogs so closely as a tweak of their tails encouraged retaliation!

Looks a real character ;D He did and was Skoda, I was fully trained as his servant Apparently ravens can live 40+ years, but I've no way of knowing how old he was when he arrived here, brought by a holidaymaker who found him on a beach.
