He attaches a special camera to a weather balloon. On 2nd page there's a graphic shows how far it travelled horizontally as well as up. He was lucky to retrieve it as it fell less than a mile from the Sea!

The set is dated 2008 so been up a while, however according to the thread I fished it from on a weather forum, they were 'private' images until a few weeks ago. I wondered if there was an issue with not having got official clearance to launch the thing (air traffic control?)
The remarkable thing is how soon you can see the earth's curve, and how thin a layer the atmosphere looks.
