I wished I had a camera with me when all my suckler calves were laid out on their sides basking in the sun the other day. Sheep always go for shade by mid morning but cows rarely seem bothered. Attachments:

Sheep always go for shade by mid morning ... They do, don't they? It makes me wonder about sheep that can't get any shade: they obviously survive, but it seems difficult to believe they like it. Given the choice, our lot go indoors if it's raining, but I'm damned if I'm putting shelters in every field for them. I just wish our lot weren't so good at looking dead. The number of times I've run across a field, heart in mouth, wondering if a well grown lamb was live or dead, and it's woken up with a start when I touched it...
