Sorry i haven't reported here of late, combination of visitors & shows seem to have tied me up. Will try harder for Okehampton & Holsworthy. I hope you manage to escape the bondage, Rose ;D

Dunster Show yesterday and it's such an attractive showgroud, being set in Exmoor National Park and with Dunster Castle perched on its crag overlooking the show fields.
The weather was very kind, sun and a good breeze and so we were all very comfortable!
Our judge was Boomer Birch, who may only be in his early twenties but has been breeding Blues since he was about eight with his mentors being his father and Graham Brindley of Bringlee fame and he has produced some top home bred winners over the past ten years, so we were looking forward to getting his opinion on our stock.
He took an age to judge the first class, which only had two in it - Blossom with her calf Geranium at foor and the Devon County Female Champ, who is in calf but no calf at foot. Cristal was carrying a lot more condition and is a bigger cow than Bloss, which I could see when we were standing alongside one another but Bloss had the advantag eof her calf at foot. But after about ten minutes - honestly - Boomer decided Cristal was his choice and both Nogel and I came out of the ring dripping!!!
Next class was the 2009 heifer class and Phil was in that with Empress, me tapping on. Thinking that Boomer obviously liked to take his time judging, we were caught on the hop when after examining each heifer, we were moved round and Empress was signalled straight into first, with a few more minutes sorting out the rest.
Next in was just three 2010 heifer, with Pip leading Feisty and me, Felicity. Fliss is six months younger than Feisty and obviously smaller, although both are well bodied heifers and I assumed I'd be third, as the the other heifer has done very well. However, Boomer fell in love with Fliss and pulled her in first with Feisty second - proper turn up, especially when in the challenge for best female, Fliss beat Empress and Cristal !! Didn't get past the lovely Drift Domino, though - the bull is pretty much unbeatabull and went on to take Supreme, deservedly so.
So very good day, especially as Geranium went best beef calf overall and also steered young Ellie Dunn to victory in her junior Leaders section and then went Reserve Junior Leader Champion as well. Especially pleasing, that, as Ellie's younger brother has been bought a pedigree Blue calf to show through the season in young leaders but for some reason, Ellie had been overlooked, just helping at the shows, so we asked her at N. Devon, where she could enter on the day, if she'd like to Geranium in, which she did and beat the lot of them first up. She's led a couple of times for us in breed classes as well before that, so we knew she could do it and Phil thinks a lot of her. She's now been promised a pedigree calf from her uncle's Highridge herd (owners of Domino) for next season. Good to see so many children keen on their cattle.

That's a super report of a really brilliant showing day for you and team, Jules. It is indeed wonderful to know there are up and coming youngsters as keen as those. Thankyou for taking the time to write it all out so interestingly.

With Devon County now underway, I thought it was time to raise this thread. Wishing both GenuineRisk and Rose plus anyone else that is competing.

Hi all - back from a very tiring few days - quite stressful as no sooner had we got down there on Wednesday that we get a phone call from Trace saying Eira was on calving. o PHil flies back at warp factor 10 while I'm giving calving advice over the phone. Tricky as this is a heifer with a pedigree on board! But our lovely Whirly bull did it again, and with Trace being told to put ropes on and when to pull, she got the calf out ! So thrilled too. Nice heifer calf, all well, Eira exceptional mum and Trace given taks of naming her, and so she's called Harmony.
Back to the show and with Felicity and Feisty in the same class and being such very different types, knew it would be interesting. Anyways, I won with Fliss, Feisty was fourth and Phil was told she was lame - oops. Bloss was also fourth, beaten by two heifers and a barren cow - she wasn't carrying enough condition.
COme the challenge, very delighted to be awarded Female Champion with Fliss and up against the top winning Domino for Breed Ch. thought it would be a given Domino would get it but judge in fact took an age and while we were Reserve, it appears likely he may be going over the top. Shame, as he as a fantastic ambassador for the breed last year with his outstanding mobility but maybe not this.
Never had Ch at Devon so nice to get that under our belts.
