This is an interesting forum page with a large number of pictures of children and their toys in small town North America and out on the plains (note sod-wall houses)
Mainly if you were a girl you had a doll, if a boy you had a cart.
The two could be combined... !
Just look at the faces.
They seem so universally glum I have to wonder if they were instructed not to smile perhaps due to the long exposure time.
Life must have been very hard for some of the less well off.
