It is the heat, disperses the clouds. Only to replace them with ash.
A big volcanic eruption will send so much ash and dust into the atmosphere it will lower global average temperatures about 1-2 degrees.

Apparently, dust from this is affecting NW Europe now including us. Here are some pictures of high altitude dust from it. It shows up at sunset as pinkish orange wavy cloud in bands, the moon may also look darker yellow or even orange. And from the UK yesterday
