Just stepped in to make a phone call and spotted a pretty big shadow cross over my back garden, so on the phone stepped out to see a quite large bird circling above. Ended the call and grabbed my camera to take some shots and need some help identifying the bird. Not the best pictures I'm afraid as it went a bit higher once it spotted me and nothing to reference the size at all. A few more shots at www.trogshot.co.uk/fd/ident/index.htmI thought possibly it was a Red Kite (?) The wingspan was approx 4 ft I would guess I certainly haven't seen anything like this around here before so certainly interested in replies.....

I would have said a Red Kite too, QB - they are on the increase in the East of England.

The RSPB has been releasing at least 50 red kites per year in Suffolk for the last 10 years, and a lot of buzzards too, though I have no idea of number for them.

I didn't know that. I had a search to identify the bird but Suffolk didn't come up in any of the results as an area with Red Kites. Having a word round yesterday I haven't heard of anybody else spotting one around here yet.

I saw one last year. It flew along our lane under the overhanging trees and in front of my car, so I got a good view. If it has that Vee notched tail it has to be a kite I think.

I think I was lucky and certainly in the right place at the right time to see the shadow crossing the garden.
I think probably if I had been outside it probably would have taken a wider berth of my house and I would have missed it altogether.
