This was the only slightly wet day this month so far, I went over to Kirby Mills for an oil pipe repair (17th) RGSP will be puzzling over the route - I nipped up to Bransdale to visit a friend (we actually started talking to each other 'over the hill' on CB radios - tractor to tractor - in about 1982! )

BTW, at the end of the Gillamoor video, just past the church after the left hand bend on Gillamoor bank, had you realised that the old road is still there, just below the present one? I have a vague memory from the late 1950s of that bank up to Gillamoor being seriously steep and rough, and of major road works, so it may be then that the present road was built.

No I wasn't aware of that but I'm not altogether surprised, a lot of the minor roads were very challenging until about then - will have a proper look next time I pass - quite often. You can often see where in the past there had been several routes up a tricky section and you had to choose wisely at the start as they were deeply incised by erosion from rain and centuries of use with minimal maintenance.
