It did occur to me that the signal test they were doing could have been done by lifting their device with it until it worked at whatever height. It probably cost almost as much to hire that unusually tall cherry picker as to buy a quad.
They were trying to find if a taller mast would be able to see and link to the nearest mobile phone mast (no apparently) They were a bit cagey as to why they wanted to do this - not necessarily to put mobile phones on it (we still do not have). The Airwaves mast is connected to the phone line but they would prefer a radio link in addition - however it must be helpful if they had a means to link mobile network to it also.
They went off to investigate if they might find a possible site for a relay on the hill near next village. This renewed interest does suggest they will be retaining the Police system, I did see something about a major revamp to it using different frequencies which might mean less sites required. Their lease ended in November last year but they are paid up until 2016.
