Coneysthorpe is a heavily preserved small village which must have originally been mainly accommodation for staff at Castle Howard. Less so today but it still seems dominated by the big house just across a shallow valley (with a man- made lake in it). The houses are all rather lovely and immaculately maintained. I didn't go to the House but just drove past. The approach is very grand with long perfectly straight roads swooping up and down over natural undulations. There are double rows of trees mainly Limes alongside the road, the originals are steadily disappearing but a few very old ones remain, The obelisk is just built from large stones it isn't a real Egyptian item. This Gatehouse thing is a serious pinchpoint on the quite busy road, the adjoining accommodation doesn't seem to be in use. By ignoring No Parking signs (briefly) - by the Gatehouse is this stunning view of the Howard family Mausoleum which is private and still 'in use'. Just by where I took the gatehouse shot there's a range of old farm buildings which would originally have been cattle sheds - dairy for the house and estate? Anyway I was surprised the old sheds are in quite poor condition, though it looked like some of the roofing materials especially lead had been stolen. Looking over gate.

Sheds are something of a contrast!
Very very pretty and well kept apart from that.
