Since tractor is set up with sprayer - but it's too windy until tomorrow - decided to have a run out to Ripon and especially to visit Markenfield Hall which I saw photos of elsewhere. This is an intriguing largely original building dating back to the same period as nearby Fountains Abbey. Though basically still a farmhouse it has a moat and the surrounding garden is rather lovely but not particularly large. Inside you can only visit a few main rooms but the chapel and Hall upstairs are amazing with partly original roof beams. The owners and volunteers hover about giving out information in a friendly way. Until about 1980 it was very run down and the then tenant used to complain bitterly that the landlord should build a bungalow for them as it was like living in a draughty church. Outside was cool and windy today but it felt warm inside. In the Hall they did have a decent log fire going in a sort of raised up hearth - it did throw out some heat. Pics should all click through to larger. markenfieldhall.com/open-days/On the way back - with difficulty - got close to Ripon Cathedral for a shot. They have made it hard to get near without walking a way.

Markenfield Hall is new to me: many thanks to 4WD as I shall make a point of visiting it. I have to say I couldn't get within range of Ripon Cathedral without visiting the Misericords in the Chancel.

Looks interesting and really beautiful. I think my ex Uist friend, now in Edinburgh, and I will have to meet somewhere in Yorkshire for the holiday we keep promising each other.
