Home from Okehampton, not too bad a result, a 2nd with the shearling, 2 3rds & a 4th, good strong competition. If I watched right Jules, think a British Blue won the Continental Champion, big black & white bull. Weather held although the sun didn't appear & it did turn a bit chilly during the afternoon. Just Ashwater & Holsworthy & then the team can have a well learned rest.

Oooh - well done, Rose - glad it was a nice dry day for you all!
Yes, indeed it was a Blue winning Interbreed - it was the same interbreed judge as at N. Devon last week (which I personally think is wrong) and it was the Dunn's again winning but this time with their bull, Drift Domino. The Dunn's are having a fantastic season this year - Geoff is a very good judge when buying in and they are still setting up their herd, so it's very rewarding for them to see their foundation stock doing so well. Domino is a very nice bull with a great temperament - I ended up holding both him and Geoff's young bull, Eddie, together outside the ring last week and they wouldn't know me from Adam.... and we had a flighty Ayrshire heifer crash into us and both lads just stood there like angels. You really can't knock their temperaments!
Does sound like a lovely show but we didn't enter because no born in 2009 classes for the heifers and so no point in going just to make up numbers, as we wouldn't be beating the Dunn's lovely Dazzle just yet!!

Last show for us yesterday and Dunster was packed!!! It did rain off and on but it was so warm and the rain varied from fine drizzle to a proper couple of downpours, luckily the latter while we wern't in the ring!
Took the famous five to the show as we had a 2009 heifer class but Enzo had to go in Bull Any Age. Heifers first and our judge had judged the breed at Launceston last month (we didn't go). Why any judge accepts an appointment so close together in the same region is beyond me and we were the only 'new' exhibitors for him. You aren't allowed to do this in the dog showing world and, say what you like about dog showing (and I have - did it for 20 years!!), it's far, far better organized than livestock showing. You can't judge the same area within 12 months, longer for championship shows. We've decided as the SW Club to issue all SW Shows with judging lists and who judged what the previous year and request that wherever possible, they don't ask judges from the previous year, as it's an awful job for them trying to get judges etc and they wouldn't know who judged where!
There were eight forward in the 2009 heifer class and N. Ermintrude and Phil took first, beating the jufge's Launceston Reserve Ch.. I was showing Empress and the judge couldn't take his eyes off her but her movement has gone to pot, I am afraid and we ended up at the end of the line up about sixth, I think. N. Eira was fourth and T. Elma fifth. So we went out on a good note - Ermintrude was considered hard for Reserve Ch to Dazzle but the Dunn's bull, Domino, was also in the line up and Ermintrude had to stand between the two - looking very small compared to them!!! He finally chose Domino as RC. Dazzle but said some very nice things about the heifer to Phil, so very pleasing. Dazzlewent on to take Interbreed again and the Dunn's also took Interbreed pairs with their young team, so they have had an absolutely stonking season!
Pip was successful again, taking Overall Beef Junior Handler, so was in the money and silverware again, so we have all had a great season. Enzo and I stood second in the line up of All Aged bulls but then got moved down to fourth (last!) as the judge said he moved beautifully but stood like a sack of potaoes - oops!
The judge came and chatted to everyone in the lineups and when he got to me and Empress, I got a complete 'essay' on her! He was a very well known breeder's stockman for years and would know an awful lot about how they develop and he said I was a thorn in his side from the minute we walked in! Empress is still the tallest and longest heifer in the classes but she simply isn't moving well. He was hopeful it was because she is growing so quickly and said she may be better next year but, even if she isn't, he said she was going to make one hell of broodcow ! Hopefully, he's right. If she was a yearling horse, I would now just turn her out and basically just feed and forget about her, so that's the plan now anyway for the heifers until they have to come back in as we'll flush them in January. With btB always lurking round here, at least by flushing them before the annual test if they can produce embryos, we aren't totally snookered as I'd hate to lose our genetics so soon.
So, we've had an amazing season - we've won every 2009 heifer class with one or other of the heifers and come second or third to 2008 heifers in the other two shows. While N. Eira hasn't won a breed class, she's come second twice and won two junior handling titles with Pip, so more than done her share! They've been very well behaved, we've had some great fun and time away from the farms, so we've been very lucky. The youngsters now definitely need the time off, as they've done more than enough and we don't want show sick animals.
So no more gadding about (other than Beef South West and the Breed stand with Enzo) and some serious calving coming up!

Think we were being told not to bother with Holsworthy, the weather yesterday was atrocious it rained all night so I was half expecting it to be cancelled. Then after humming & harring as to go or not to go bit the bullet & loaded the sheep & trundled off, half way there my OH thought the front tyre had blown & pulled over, after going around kicking all tyres couldn't find a blown one any where, continued on but felt something definately wrong pulled over again & found the the belt on the power steering had gone, we carefully limped into the show. Needn't have bothered, got a 3rd with the one pair of lambs & a 3rd with one of the ram lambs, but there didn't seem any consistancy in the judging, but it's up to the judge on the day, so our last show was a bit of a let down, but never mind they can now relax till next year.

Oh bum, Rose - what a irritating end to your show season. I must admit to feeling very glad we hadn't bothered to enter Holsworthy when it continued to rain this morning - too much like the previous two years of 'summer' shows for my liking! But you're right, we pay our entry fees for the judges opinion, no one forces us to go and so we have to just suck it up (such a delightful American saying, no ? )!
