I was surprised to find that at my local newsagent here in Thailand there are several cock fighting mags for sale. Here's one that I bought out of curiosity: I didn't really know much about it, other than the fact that it's banned in the UK (very banned apparently). However, it seems that there are several villages in France where it's legal - many Brits travel to these villages to participate, and supposedly some actually keep fighting birds in these villages. The UK government seems to view it as almost worse than pedophilia. Of course cock fighting is cruel, but hardly worse than the barbaric halal abbatoirs in the UK which are licensed by the UK government.

Totally agree with you on that point. The reason abbatoirs stun animals before they bleed them is simply because it is cruel not to. So why allow it for Halal ? As you say it's barbaric.

I hate the idea of cock fighting having seen some of my little varmints at it.
I don't like the idea of Halal either but OH used to work in abattoirs where it was done and said the worst part was the restraint systems, which I think have been modified. However I like to know my old ewes and any tup lambs that aren't kept as tups go to our local abattoir.
Did anyone see the Compassion in World Farming video of pig slaughter in Egypt? That was the most barbaric thing I've seen in a long time.
If thoughts boomerang then I'll die a nasty death from 'swine' flu shortly.

Cock fighting is cruel and don't get me started on Halal/Kosher killlings, maybe if a few people who are in favour of it had their throats cut they'd change their minds about it.
Should be made illegal in the UK but liberal civil servant sorts won't ban it for fear of annoying Jews and Muslims.

I know it is only a small proportion but it should be banned entirely.

Going against the tide here....but while I prefer sheep to be stunned first, Hal Al isn't as bad as I thought it would be, now that I've seen it preformed. Done correctly the blood pressure in the brain drops instantaineously and renders the animal unconcious. Much the same as fainting I expect. The writhing that goes on afterwards I'd put down to reflex activity much like a decapitated chicken running around. I would expect the amount of pain involved to be minimal.
Isn't it in that part of the world they have horse fighting as well?

Also very big in the Philipinnes - every village has a ring and the rural towns it is even a major pull - called Sabong it is one of the national sports.
A lot of TV stations devote Sunday afternoons to it and - believe it or not -they are sponsored by the feed firms.
Gambling goes with the sport - all cash and not unlike the Deerhunter scene in atmosphere.
( I once had to bail out a drunken ex pat Scot who was in well over his head and do a runner!)

look hard eneff there will be cock fighting going on in the UK I'm sure there will jdkid. I've just started reading Temple Grandin's Animals in Translation - it looks as if it's going to be fascinating. As I said above Halal is not necessarily cruel, but the handling beforehand may well be.
