Hi I have taken stockslave's advice and joined off topic. I am a regular poster on BFF. My name is Caroline and I am into White and Belted Galloway cattle and Lleyn sheep. I live on a dairy farm with hubby Adam who is a dairy farmer and my two kids. We live in Ayrshire in South West Scotland and I work as an agricultural consultant. I love everything agricultural but am most interested in native breeds and performance of livestock from forage based systems.

Hi Lessnessock, you've come to the right place then....says she with native Sussex Cattle that get nothing but forage and a mineral lick Having said that, that's all the sheep get as well You'll find that a lot of the names on here will be the same as on BFF, enjoy yourself

Thanks Joyce I need to keep my website more up to date. I will put together something for the classifieds as I need to reduce numbers to help fund a new shed this summer.

Hi lessnessocks, welcome, sure you'll enjoy the friendship on here. I keep Hampshire Downs & am a strong supporter of the native breeds.

There's only about 3 miles of ground between me an Texel (plus about 90 miles of sea). Can I count my Texel sheep as a local breed? One of this year's lambs went swimming in the moat today: Otter-like she was, swimming like mad and throwing up quite an impressive bow wave. Welcome anyway.

Not only survived, but looked more like a powder puff than a lamb after she had an hour or so in bright sunshine to dry off. This is the lamb that was my first experience of a projectile birth (which I initially thought was afterbirth) and who had a birth weight of just under 1.5 kg, and took over 2 weeks to be able to suck from a teat instead of being stomach tubed.

Sounds like you are very patient rgsp! I have a triplet pet that took 5 days to suck a bottle after its mum took mastitis. I was nearly round the bend. Poor thing just needed a mum as it would happily suck any ewe. Hopefully your lamb won't make a habit of swimming in the moat.
Not sure of Texels as a native breed but many of my Lleyns look like they have had an encounter with a texel tup!

I don't think there's many decent Lleyns about these days that don't have bit of Texel in them. Anyway, Wales is a lot further and a lot more foreign to me than Holland, and as long as you know a bit of Norfolk dialect, Dutch is understandable if spoken slowly and with the accompaniment of a couple of pints. Doesn't work with Welsh.
