I've been looking at one of the Collins Gem books as it would be a good size to carry around in a rucksack. I just wondered if anyone used a book that they could recommend?

Personally I'd prefer a real old fashioned country person, who was prepared to eat the thing before I did! I used to love wild mushrooms when my father picked them, but don't trust myself with the recognition.

My mum used to pick them in her dad's meadows.... but with her memory issues I'm not so sure.... mind you, the older she gets - the smaller she gets

Had a friend visit this morning who was talking about mushrooms and books. He said he had the observer book which would definitely go in a rucksack.

We have a copy of "Collins Field Guide to Mushrooms and Toadstools" which has been in many rucsacks for the last 30 years or so. It has an excellent key to identification, which if followed properly is as near 100% accurate as any key can be. Second hand editions tend to go for silly prices, and you might do better buying the updated version new, though I haven't seen a copy myself.
A bit bigger, about 6"x9", is "Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms of the World" by Hall, Stephenson, Buchanan, Yun and Cole, and published by the Timber Press in 2003. ISBN 0-88192-586-1. I found a copy remaindered in Cambridge, and it's a lovely and informative book, which I would be inclined to buy as well as the Collins publication.
