Does 'should' come into it after children have flown the nest?
Parents certainly should look after small children and gradually wean them into the world of self reliance so that they can live independent lives - that's what parenting is IMO.
I still 'look after' my grown children and they also 'look after' me depending on circumstances, but 'should' they look after me due to my age or infirmities? - I hope they'll find me a suitable 'home' if I haven't found one for myself when/if the time comes, as I 100% do not want to live with them.

I will always "look after" my children but would never ever expect them to "look after" me. They have their own lives to lead.

I am looking after my mom. She will be 90 in December. I'm about there too, Wulvo. But neither of us are too thrilled about it. Mum has friends and a life 300 miles away from us. Difficult. Nobody tells you that by the time your children have lives of their own (not saying they don't need you though ), you may need to 'look after' the older generation. Agree with Joyce it's not compulsory, but a close family even if they are scattered in different countries is a good thing. Have just spoken to mum (87) daughter No.1 (37 today) and two grandsons (7 & 5) Daughter No 2 will no doubt bring news (and her washing) tomorrow - and shoot some rabbits I hope. (They nicked some cauli plants last night . More wire put up today)
