Proper rmany gypsies are a distinct ethnic group, one that suffers quite badly from discrimination especially in eastern europe i believe. i imagine in the past the distrust of gipsies came from a general mistrust of strangers and outsiders, which was perhaps understandable. years ago the gypsie women used to come round selling heather and clothespegs and similar stuff, my granny would always buy something from them because it was believed that they could impart good luck. The people we call pikeys aren't gypsies, they're Travellers, mostly of irish origin who chose to move around, not because of their 'cultural heritage' but because if one makes a living by ripping of the unsuspecting and indulging in petty crime, it's best not to stay in one place too long (some of them are apparently popping up in america and australia, pulling the same fake tools / dodgy groundworking scams they've pulled for decades over here.) Gypsies and pikeys are two different things, the latter being characterised by a culture od entitlement and anti social behaviour of almost unbelievable extremes, as this article details. www.independent.ie/opinion/columnists/kevin-myers/we-have-created-a-legal-apartheid-for-travellers-in-which-aberrant-behaviour-is-actually-called-culture-1826499.html

It does sound very intersting joyce, and judging from the the revue you posted it seems to be about irish travellers rather than actual gypsies, perhaps before they discovered tarmac and transit vans.

My great grandfather was a romany gypsy and i can confidently say we are all trouble just the type of trouble varies as does teh level. I for example am trouble only when liberally doused with alcohol or surrounded by young ladies but no Mrs FD.
Other gypsies (pikeys) are more trouble than they are worth.

joyce I met the auther many years ago and know some of the decendants from my school days ,a lot of them settled in to a sort of normal life in the Perthshire area ,if you were prepared to listen there was always a tale to be told in the pub of some escapade and like all other types of people there were some bad amongst them but from my own experience they were mostly good hearted folk who would do you no harm .they are not anything like modern pikeys . another book is " The river and the road " by Peter Goodwin and tells the story of getting involved with the same family in more modern times and the escapades at the pearl fishing .

That's really interesting Defender. I also knew real gypsy families as I was growing up, but like everyone else I expect lots of the old standards have slipped I'll look out for the book.
