Any suggestions on removing moss from a lawn gratefully considered....
After cutting my mums lawns yesterday I'm hoping it isn't too late for a remedy that won't involve completely starting again as she lives in a small cul-de-sac and her front lawn is a) pretty big & b) very visible - so I don't want to make it into a complete eyesore over the summer months.

Ferrous suphate: probably best to buy it combined with a grass fertilizer, so the grass gets a boost while the moss dies. People also talk about compaction, too low a pH, waterlogging etc. as causes of moss, but sometimes weather conditions just encourage moss, and that's what has happened for the last couple of years.
PS I should have said that Ferrous sulphate and fertiliser are sold as lawn sand: there is sand there as well, mainly to dilute the mixture, but also in the hope it might improve surface drainage. A light dressing will discourage the moss, and encourage the grass, without killing all the moss stone dead, which, as 4WD says, can be unsightly. Raking moss out is good, but b..... hard work over a large area, and I was guessing you wouldn't want to do it.

A scarifier then a bit of fertiliser to encourage the grass. It will keep coming back if ours is anything to go by. You can get a chemical treatment makes it go black but it will still come back and it looks horrible for weeks.
Longer term keep the grass stronger with a bit of fert (counter intuitive as you think it will need more cutting!)

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure I could set-up a chicken run where Mum lives.... although she could probably sell the eggs quite easily.... I reckon I will have to do a bit of raking for a start, once we get a few dry days - I guess it will come out a bit easier then(?) - The garden is not too big to tackle if that will give it the best chance. Once that is done I try the lawn sand. Although I always cut the grass, I hadn't really noticed it was so bad until I cut the grass yesterday and it was a bit damp and I left a trail of footprints up & down the lawn.... oops..
