I don't have a gun now (other than air rifle)but when we had shotgun I was convinced they had psychic abilities to know when you were getting it out. If they were after a flat bit of barley they'd not give up coming back all day if you didn't have any cartridges and chasing them off with a dog would only work half an hour.

A kite or wind sock will help keep them away as long as you move it's position or change it in some way. They don't like 'new' situations, unless it's a sheep on it's back
