This was lying in the road near the house just now - I thought it was dead but it squirmed about quite strongly when I picked it up. After a couple of shots I put it back in the verge. It had recently lost it's tail.

To a first order, it looks like the small/medium brown sand-eels I used to catch off the beach as a teenager, strip the backbone out of, and then fry for tea. Delicious they were, but cooking made the muscle tissue contract, so they writhed around in the pan disconcertingly.
