It reminded me of being fascinated with an apple corer tool we used to have (in the 60s?) It would be something like this but with wooden handle. Since you invariably needed to trim bits off anyway if at all fussy it was hardly a time-saving device. No doubt he doesn't have to clean that kitchen either!

I still use my wooden handled corer when I want a baked apple - I'm a bit dangerous with knives so it probably has saved my fingers a few times
