An astonishing Trompe l'oeil which would make no sense at all except from this angle.

Rani ki Vav or Ranki vav is a stepwell situated in the town of Patan in the Gujarat state of India. It is located on the banks of the Saraswati river. Its construction is attributed to Udayamati, daughter of Khengara of Saurashtra, queen, and spouse of the 11th-century Chaulukya king Bhima I. Silted over, it was rediscovered in the 1940s and restored in the 1980s by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Not quite random, but having had privileged access to Ely cathedral, I happen to know these gargoyle-like characters are actually stone caricatures of head masons responsible for building maintenance. In fact there's a row of them on the Lady Chapel wall facing the cathedral chancel. Elsewhere they're almost all the result of masons imagination, just having fun.

Gormire Lake near Sutton Bank a couple of days ago. I can't say I've ever seen it with ice on and very few photos showing it like that. It wouldn't have frozen here we have barely been below freezing due to wind and no fog nearer the coast. Over there has been freezing fog all day once or twice. The lake is essentially a glacial feature, all the low lying land beyond was at one time an ice sheet hundreds of feet thick, as it started to melt a lot of water ran around the edges and the ridge holding the water back is part of a lateral moraine - debris pushed up along the side of slow moving ice. The fog filling the plain to some extent resembles the ice age scene. It was traditionally claimed to be 'bottomless' but when measured it's about 30ft deep in the middle however the bottom is not firm but many feet of fine silt and tree debris. The water looks black it has a sinister forbidding feeling with tall trees all around. There is no obvious inlet or outlet but in wet periods water does trickle away into rocks near the cliffs above.

Apparently this house in Chicago was owned by elderly man who fiercely refused to sell for redevelopment so eventually high rise offices went up both sides. In 2015 he died and it stood empty for some time. Eventually it was acquired by one of the adjacent owners but they decided to renovate not redevelop, and are leasing it for office as it is now. I would think not much original is left inside.

Winnats Pass in Derbyshire. It is a remarkably steep ravine not unlike Cheddar Gorge but Winnats is thought to have been formed when a large cave system collapsed thousands of years ago. The area is riddled with natural caves some are very large you can visit some at Castleton - the village beyond. The small parking area just on level area is for a cave you go through in a boat.

^ It looks more built up than I expected in front and beyond judging by the glow. I remember watching a travel-video probably on youtube where someone took a train ride probably from Tokyo to see Fuji and it seemed to be interminable housing alternating with industrial estates and only pocket sized fields here and there.
