en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabbath_modeApparently your new appliance might come with this pre-installed, it almost sounds like a joke but 'serious' Jews aren't even allowed to do the *work* of turning on the oven on The Sabbath. So they put stuff in the day before and keep it warm, you can still get it out to eat but not turn the oven on or off, seems logical. You can even get a lamp which has a sort of screen to pull round so you can turn the light off without the work of switching it off. Historically making and maintaining a fire to cook was much more like work, and would distract from your prayers and bible studies so you can sort of see where they are coming from.
