Can't see a white Police Officers' Association anywhere ? It's called the Freemasons. The aim of the NBPA is to promote the retention and recruitment of black and ethnic staff to the police. Robert Peel's initial vision for the police force was it would be 'of the people, for the people', and the idea that there are a proportional number of black officers to the number of black people in the uk as a whole hardly seems like an unreasonable aim. The idea being to promote community relations between minority groups who might otherwise feel misunderstood or prejudiced against by an exclusively white police force. As for the need for a white police officers' association, do you think there are similar problems with the recruitment and retention of white police officers? While admirable I can't help but be horrified by the notion that police officers are being selected because of the colour of their skin. Whatever happened to the best man for the job? If that means an entire police force of black men because they are better at the job then so be it. The opposite also applies. It could be refered to a discrimination in reverse or to put its more disgusing term positive discrimination. No discrimination should be positive. This is where all the ill feeling is generated because we have backed ourselves into a corner where it has become wrong to employ the best man for the job regardless of their colour.

Not sure it's a chip Phil!!! Just an alternative view, not one I agree with but it would be bloody boring if we all thought the same!! If a politician came and said vote for me and I'll end political correctness they'd be a shoe in. The general public are fed up with the frankly devisive nature of the PC brigade.

I take your point grainman and agree absolutely that we shouldn't have positive discrimination. though i think to be fair the key aim of the NBPA is to encourage suitable candidates to join the police and stay in the force, rather than to promote unsuitable candidates because they are of a particular ethnic group. I think if targets are set for a percentage of black and asian officers, then it's enevitable that if there's a shortfall of such candidates then the bar might be lowered for people who fill the neccessary requirments, but that would be the fault of the govt for setting such targets, rather than the NBPA, which was set up in the first place in response the the high drop out rate for black officers in the Met.

I'm not the one with a chip on my shoulder, i'm merely offering a different opinion to you, and doing so in entirely reasonable terms, what exactly is your problem with this?
